PROGRAM TITLE: ________Ian Dobson’s Steel Drum Party_______

two themed variations available- Steel Drum Party: Beat Science and Steel Drum Party: Recycalypso

Program Description:

Throughout history there have been people from different cultures who wanted to make music but faced challenges, such as poverty, that prevented them from doing so.  The show explores how they overcame this adversity by inventing creative ways to make music through repurposing and recycling.  The program is interactive, with the audience participating throughout as they learn about musical innovations such as steel drums from the Island of Trinidad, the hambone rhythm from the United States, and the cha cha cha dance from Cuba.  The show culminates with the audience inventing unique musical sounds that Ian turns into a song, with the grand finale of a limbo and parade!

The video link below will give an idea of what a complete show is like, although several things have evolved somewhat, particularly the ending.

Ian Dobson’s Steel Drum Party is also available in Spanish or bilingually in Spanish and English.

TWO THEMED VARIATIONS

Steel Drum Party:Beat Science-puts extra focus on the science and physics of sound and rhythm.

Steel Drum Party: Recycalypso-puts extra focus on recycling and inventing an original musical instrument.  Ideally libraries can choose to promote the Recycalypso Challenge in advance of the Recycalypso show.  The Recycalypso Challenge asks audiences to invent and design their own unique musical instrument out of recycled materials and bring their creations to the show.  A video explaining the activity is available at https://www.iandobson.com/group/Recycled_Rhythms.

This craft project also makes a great story-time activity in the weeks leading up to the performance, or an activity, for example, during the 30 minutes prior to the show.  Or the library can simply post the video link and encourage people to watch and make instruments to bring to the show.  Be assured though that the instrument-making activity is not required for the show to be lots of fun!  Please contact Ian if you would like the Recycalypso Orchestra Workshop instead of the show.  The workshop is more hands-on than the show and centers around the instrument-making activity, which Ian leads.  The workshop requires more advance preparation and gathering of materials by the librarian and the base price is higher.
